The Return Policy

Hook

At a Sunday flea market, a widower discovers a stall where the old woman doesn't want money — she trades objects for the specific memory attached to them, and she's willing to give him back his late wife's wedding ring for the afternoon he proposed.

Escalation
  1. He trades the proposal — a fair deal, he tells himself, since he still has the marriage — and finds the ring warm in his pocket, but that night he can't picture how he knelt, only that he did; the fact survives, the feeling is gone.
  2. He returns week after week, buying back her hairbrush with the smell of her neck, her reading glasses with the sound of her laugh, until his apartment fills with her things and his head empties of her, and he realizes the stall only ever sells items he himself once surrendered in previous lives he can't remember.
  3. Desperate to know who is on the other end of the trade, he stakes out the market at dawn and watches the old woman set up — and she unwraps, from newspaper, a young man's memory of a woman at a flea market, buying back a wedding ring, which she prices and sets out for sale.
✦ Twist

He is not the customer and never was; he is the merchandise — a single grief the old woman has been reselling to lonely men for decades, each one buying his way into a marriage that was only ever a story printed on the price tag, and the ring in his pocket has no engraving because there was never a wife to engrave it.

💡 The engine is a barter economy where the currency is memory, so every 'good deal' hollows the buyer until the buyer discovers he was the inventory all along.
