The Deep End Auction

Hook

A municipal pool is closing forever, so the town holds a bizarre farewell ritual: whoever can hold their breath longest at the bottom of the deep end gets to keep the water — all 340,000 gallons — pumped into a tanker to do with as they please.

Escalation
  1. A retired swim coach wins easily, but instead of taking the water home she refuses to let it be drained, camping on the diving board and claiming the pool is now legally hers to occupy until the last drop leaves.
  2. The town discovers the coach's dead husband taught half the adults present to swim in that pool, and that she scattered nothing of him anywhere — because she poured his ashes into the filtration system years ago, and the water is, to her, his body.
  3. As summer heat evaporates the pool inch by inch, neighbors begin sneaking in at night to swim one last time, unknowingly baptizing themselves in the man who taught them, and the coach starts keeping a ledger of every visitor as if recording who came to the wake.
✦ Twist

On the final morning the pool is bone dry — but the coach is gone too, and the ledger's last entry is her own name beside a note that she'd been holding her breath the whole time not to win the water, but to be the last thing the deep end ever held.

💡 The engine is a public ritual that turns a shared childhood space into one woman's private grave, forcing a whole town to reckon with whose memories a place belongs to.
