The Continental

Hook

A business traveler learns the hotel breakfast ends at 10:00 sharp — but the buffet staff, hovering with trays, begin clearing food at 9:52, and every guest silently accepts this as law. Except him. He decides to eat one more sausage after 9:52.

Escalation
  1. The waiter doesn't argue — he simply notes the infraction on a clipboard, and the guest discovers his room key stops working: you cannot check out until your breakfast record is 'settled,' and his is now in deficit.
  2. To settle it he must eat the food he 'wrongfully' saved, but the kitchen only serves at exact intervals, so he's trapped eating cold scrambled eggs at precisely timed increments while other long-term guests — pale, over-full, resigned — explain they've been settling their deficits for years.
  3. He tries to escape by refusing to eat, but the fire doors are keycard-locked to breakfast compliance; the only way out is to bring the buffet to zero, and the buffet, he realizes, is bottomless — the chafing dishes refill from below the moment they empty.
  4. He organizes the long-term guests into a synchronized eating brigade to drain the buffet faster than it refills, a starving-yet-stuffed army timing their forks to a stopwatch, gaining ground meal by meal.
✦ Twist

They win — the buffet finally runs dry at 9:59 — and the doors unlock. But outside is another lobby, another sign: LUNCH SERVICE BEGINS AT 11:30. The waiter hands him a fresh clipboard. He was never a guest; the checkout was always the next meal.

💡 The engine is a mundane social rule ("breakfast ends at 10") treated as inescapable physical law, so every escape attempt just reveals the next rule underneath.
