The Machine That Sells You Back

Hook

A vending machine appears overnight in the break room of a dying carpet factory, and instead of snacks it dispenses small objects people had lost years ago — a dead father's lighter, a class ring, a specific Tuesday — each priced not in coins but in a memory you have to feed into the slot and never get back.

Escalation
  1. Word spreads through the night shift: feed it the memory of your wedding song, get back your grandmother's handwriting on a recipe card. The trades start small and sentimental, and the machine is scrupulously fair — it only ever returns things you genuinely lost.
  2. People begin arriving with lists, farming their own lives for currency, selling off the day they learned to ride a bike, the smell of a first apartment, whole summers, to buy back single irreplaceable minutes with the people the town has buried.
  3. The factory reopens — not to make carpet, but because everyone now works there just to stay near the machine, and management realizes the workers are so hollowed out and compliant that they'll accept any wage, having sold away every memory of ever wanting more.
  4. A young woman notices the machine's inventory is growing: it now offers memories that were never hers, that belong to coworkers who've traded away so much they no longer recognize the objects being sold back to them at the next slot over.
✦ Twist

She finally buys the one thing she came for — the afternoon her sister drowned, so she can finally remember her face — and as the machine dispenses it, she understands what it actually is: not a seller but a redistributor, moving each town's grief in a slow circle, and the coin it demanded for her sister was the exact memory some stranger, three shifts and thirty years from now, will one day pay everything to buy.

💡 The engine is a market where the currency and the merchandise are the same finite substance, so every 'gain' is secretly the town liquidating itself.
