The Two-Minute Confessional

Hook

Father Dmitri lost his parish and bought a car wash with the settlement money. He keeps the sign that came with it — RADIANT AUTO SPA — and he keeps something else: the moment the brushes close over a car and the world goes white and roaring, drivers start talking. Not to him. He's outside in a windbreaker. They talk to the intercom he installed "for safety," because two minutes in a soundproof storm is the only privacy anyone in Cudahy has ever been offered, and because a voice with no face is easier to tell things to than God ever was.

Escalation
  1. He starts keeping a ledger — not names, just plate numbers and sins — the way he used to keep the parish book, purely so he can pray over people who'd spit if he offered. Then a woman in a Corolla says she's going to do it tonight, and doesn't say what, and he loses four hours of sleep and cross-references her plate against the police blotter and the obituaries, and finds nothing, which is somehow worse.
  2. So he starts steering. A word through the intercom before the rinse cycle: *the hardware store on Layton is hiring* — *your daughter knows, she's just waiting for you to say it first.* Business triples on word of mouth nobody can explain; people wash clean cars twice a week. A teenager tapes a bouquet to the vacuum station. Dmitri understands he has accidentally built a parish that pays him $14 a car.
  3. A detective named Ruiz brings in a cruiser with a dent she can't explain and talks for the full two minutes about a case she's burying to protect her partner. She recognizes the pauses. She recognizes the *technique*. And she comes back the next day not to wash anything but to ask, with a subpoena in her jacket, whether Radiant Auto Spa is a confessional — which would make it privileged — or a recording device, which would make it evidence, and hands Dmitri the choice of which lie to tell under oath.
  4. Dmitri says it's a confessional. Which requires him, legally and publicly, to be a priest again — and the diocese that defrocked him now owns the only thing keeping his ledger sealed. A bishop drives up in a leased Buick, buys the deluxe wash, and sits in the roaring white for two minutes without saying a word, waiting to see if Dmitri will beg through the intercom.
