- By late January the betting pool dwarfs the fitness revenue entirely; regulars stop working out and just sit in the lobby watching the live odds screen, treating other members' hangovers and head colds as insider trading tips.
- A local underdog — a nurse on night shifts who literally cannot lose weight but never misses a session — becomes a blue-chip stock, and syndicates form to sabotage her: fake class cancellations, a 'free' donut van parked outside, an ex texting at midnight.
