The Resolution Futures Market

Hook

A struggling boutique gym stops selling memberships and starts selling shares in whether you'll quit — you buy in at $200, and every day you show up your stake grows; every day you skip, it pays out to strangers betting against you.

Escalation
  1. Word spreads that the smart money is on failure, so a subculture of "Quitters" — people who join purely to short their own willpower — floods the studio, deliberately no-showing to collect from the true believers who bet on themselves.
  2. The gym hires a "Retention Analyst" whose job is to keep the January crowd coming, but she quietly realizes the house makes more when people fail, so she starts scheduling 5:47 a.m. classes and rebranding the sauna as 'optional' to nudge attrition upward.
  3. By late January the betting pool dwarfs the fitness revenue entirely; regulars stop working out and just sit in the lobby watching the live odds screen, treating other members' hangovers and head colds as insider trading tips.
  4. A local underdog — a nurse on night shifts who literally cannot lose weight but never misses a session — becomes a blue-chip stock, and syndicates form to sabotage her: fake class cancellations, a 'free' donut van parked outside, an ex texting at midnight.
✦ Twist

On January 31 the nurse cashes out her own soaring shares, and the final ledger reveals she never wanted to get fit — she wanted the payout to quit her job, and the only person who beat the market on willpower was the one who was never actually trying to change.

💡 The engine is turning self-improvement into a tradable asset, so every character's incentive to fail becomes more profitable than their desire to succeed.
