The Acoustics Consultant

Hook

A struggling open-plan office hires an acoustics consultant to fix its noise complaints — but instead of dampening sound, she quietly tunes the room so every private conversation carries perfectly to one desk: the CEO's.

Escalation
  1. She frames it as 'productivity zoning': soft carpet tiles that funnel gossip toward the corner office, a 'quiet pod' whose curved glass acts as a parabolic mic, a white-noise machine that masks nothing and reveals everything by canceling only the CEO's own footsteps so he moves through the room unheard.
  2. The staff, feeling mysteriously exposed, start whispering — so she 'solves' the whispering by installing decorative water features whose pitch is calibrated to make lips easier to read on the ceiling-mounted 'wellness cameras.'
  3. One employee, an ex-recording engineer, notices the room is tuned like a concert hall and starts leaving false confessions at the acoustic sweet spots — feeding the CEO manufactured betrayals until he fires his most loyal people.
  4. With the office gutted of anyone competent, the CEO becomes wholly dependent on the consultant, who now controls what he hears and therefore what he believes is true.
✦ Twist

The consultant was hired by the board, not the CEO — the whole build was designed so that on one specific afternoon the room would carry HIS voice, unmasked and self-incriminating, straight to a single planted microphone at the receptionist's desk, where the board sat listening the entire time.

💡 The engine is a space that weaponizes the very transparency open offices promise — turning 'nothing to hide' into a trap that closes on whoever built it.
