Every Sunday, a woman sets up a stall selling the belongings of a husband who is very much alive — because he asked her to, so he could watch strangers decide what his life was worth before he leaves it.
Escalation
- A regular buyer keeps returning for one item a week — the fishing lure, the wedding cufflinks, the reading glasses — and pays absurd prices, and the husband, hidden in the parked car across the lot, starts falling in love with how badly this stranger wants to become him.
- The wife, running low on real belongings, begins salting the table with fakes and lies — a war medal he never earned, love letters she wrote herself — and the buyer weeps over each one, so the husband's actual life quietly gets replaced by a better invented one at four dollars an item.
- The buyer finally asks to meet 'the late husband's widow' for coffee, confessing he's assembling the dead man piece by piece because his own father vanished and left nothing to sell — and the wife realizes she's been furnishing a stranger's grief with her living husband's biography.
- The husband, unable to bear being outbid for his own existence, walks up to the table on the last Sunday and offers to buy back the fake war medal — and the buyer, not recognizing a man he only knows as objects, refuses to sell.

The husband never planned to leave her for another woman or another city — the 'leaving' was death; he's terminally ill and staged the sale so he could audition, as a customer, for a version of himself worth mourning, and he finally overpays for his own reading glasses just to hold them one more time before Sunday runs out.
💡 The engine is dramatic irony as commerce — a man haggling, incognito, over the market price of his own soul while the clock quietly closes the stall.
