The Farewell Circuit

Hook

Dolores has attended 412 retirement parties in eleven years. She has never worked a day at any of these companies. She has a garment bag with four cardigans, a laminated index of industry jargon, and a rule: arrive at the toast, cry at the slideshow, leave before the cake is cut. Sheet cake, free prosecco, and ninety minutes of being told she'll be missed — that is her entire social life, and she is extraordinarily good at it.

Escalation
  1. At a logistics firm in Teterboro she breaks rule three and stays for cake, because the honoree — Marv, forty-one years in dispatch — has nobody standing near him. She improvises: she was his trainee in '94. Marv, who has early dementia, beams and says he always knew she'd do well. The room adopts her. She goes home with a gift bag and a genuine, unbearable ache, and starts staying for cake everywhere.
  2. Staying for cake means being photographed. A regional HR consultant named Priya notices the same weeping woman in three different companies' LinkedIn galleries and starts a folder. But instead of reporting her, Priya — whose actual job is running the retirement parties nobody has time to plan — hires her. Off the books, cash. Some honorees have thin turnouts. Dolores becomes a professional mourner for careers: the plant that fills the empty chairs.
  3. Word spreads through the HR underground. Dolores builds a small crew — a failed actor who does the "remember when you covered my shift" speech, a retired bookkeeper who cries on cue, a kid who runs the slideshow. They get good enough that real coworkers start hanging back, relieved, letting the professionals handle the feelings. Dolores realizes she is no longer filling a gap; she is the reason the gap exists.
  4. A billion-dollar firm hires the crew to send off a man being quietly pushed out before his pension vests — they want the party to look loving so it can't look like what it is. Dolores takes the money. Mid-toast she watches the executives check their watches and understands she has been hired as the anesthetic for a mercy killing, and that this is what she's always been, at every one of the 412.
✦ Twist

She keeps the job, but changes the product: she starts throwing retirement parties for people who were never allowed one — the fired, the laid-off, the night-shift contractors who left with a badge deactivation email. No company sponsors them. She rents VFW halls and buys the sheet cake herself with the billion-dollar firm's money. At the first one, forty strangers show up to weep for a woman none of them ever worked with, and Dolores finally has to stand at the front and be seen, which is the one thing in eleven years she has never done. Marv is in the third row. He still thinks she was his trainee. She lets him.

💡 A con built entirely out of a need for belonging, where the con is indistinguishable from the real thing until someone pays her to make it fake on purpose.
