The Drowned Town Swim Team

Hook

The municipal pool in Kellerton has been closed for eleven years, so the high school swim team trains in the reservoir that swallowed the old town of Vale — and the county's worst drought in a century is lowering the water four inches a week, which means that by August the girls will be doing their 200-meter sets directly above the roof of the Vale Baptist Church.

Escalation
  1. Coach Marlin, who grew up in Vale before the dam, uses the sinking waterline as a training gimmick: every week the girls swim a lap over a newly visible landmark — the water tower, the grain elevator, the pitched roof of the old high school — and the team starts breaking records, because you swim faster over a rooftop than over nothing.
  2. At sixty feet the girls find the Vale swimming pool: a rectangle of poured concrete standing intact in the murk, the only structure with straight lines left down there. They start using it as a turnaround marker, then as a dare, then as a clubhouse — descending into it on a single breath, sitting on the bottom of a pool inside a lake, passing a waterproof notebook back and forth.
  3. In the deep end of the drowned pool, under a drift of silt, is a car — a 1978 Monte Carlo that was reported stolen the week before the flooding, with a woman's swim cap still knotted to the gearshift. The girls tell no adult, because telling means the reservoir becomes a crime scene and the season ends, and three of them have scholarship times within reach.
  4. The drought accelerates. The reservoir drops past the pool's rim, then past its lip, and the thing the whole town has been not-looking-at for eleven years stands in open air with the water draining out of it — and Coach Marlin, who has been swimming a slow, private lap every dawn in that exact spot, starts showing up at practice with a shovel in his truck bed.
✦ Twist

The swim cap belongs to Marlin's sister, the state champion whose records the girls have spent all summer breaking — and she isn't in the car. She drove it into the Vale pool herself the night before the flood, as the only way to leave a town that would never let her, and Marlin has spent eleven years training girls to be fast enough that they'd never need to drown themselves to get out. When the reservoir bottoms out he doesn't dig; he fills the old pool from a tanker truck, one load at a time, and makes the team swim their trials in it — because the record she set was set in that water, and he wants it beaten honestly, in the same rectangle, in the open air.

💡 The engine is a receding waterline that functions as an inverted clock — every inch the drought takes reveals more of a buried past while shortening the time the girls have to outrun it.
